Introduced at Photokina 1966, the Six element ultra speed 11820 50mm 1:1.2 Noctilux lens produces an exceptionally high degree of contrast and is almost entirely free of spherical aberration and coma.
The use glasses with a high refractive index and the incorporation of aspherically ground surfaces on certain elements, coupled with the almost complete elimination of internal reflections, makes the Leitz Wetzlar produced Noctilux eminently suited to even the most extreme low light conditions.
The black anodized Nocilux accepts series 8 filters held in position by the special open sector lens hood 12503,Last cataloged in 1975, the 50mm 1:1.2 Noctilux 11820 was replaced in early 1976 by the 50mm 50mm f1.0 Noctilux 11821. ( Lager Vol II )

Because of its weight, which made it rather unwieldy for professional use, and its high cost, the Noctilux 50mm f/1.2 did not meet with the success which had been hoped for, also because its price more than doubled that of a Leica M4.
