The Leica M2 was manufactured in 1957 at No.926001 production ceased at No.1165000 in 1967.Formally introduced in 1958 , the M2 was a simplified single stroke M3 with three important differences: no self timer , external manually reset frame counter and 0.72X viewfinder system with fram lines for 35,50 and 90mm lenses. The M2 became known as the "wide angle" Leica due to the built-in frame line for the 35mm focal length, a favorite of photo-journalists. Depth-of-field indicator notches in the rangefinder were introduce on the M2. The M2 with self-timer began production in 1958 at No. 949101 and was produced concurrently with the M2 without timer. Production records suggest that at No. 1004151 in 1960 only the self-timer model continued in production. On this basis, one might assume that all M2 bodies above No. 1004150 had self-timers; however, this is not the case. In March 1962, a special M2 without timer was announced by E. Leitz, Inc. It can be seen, therefore, that several versions of the M2 exist: the original M2 less timer, the M2 with timer (called M2S in catalogues), and the 1962 M2 less timer (called M2X in catalogues). The designations M2S and M2X are catalogue listings only; they are not engraved on the cameras. The M2 accepted the Leicavit MP winder as used on the MP and, when modified, the E. Leitz, Inc. electric motor. M2S and M2X modified for motor use are listed in E. Leitz, Inc. catalogues as early as October 1965. M2 bodies made in 1966 at No. 1163771-1164046 are engraved M2-M and also accept the moto. The majority of M2's were manufactured with traditional Leitz silver chrome plating. Black paint M2's as well as grey finished bodies exist. The black M2 can have a rewind button or lever and be equipped with or without self-timer. Twenty M2's (1005751-1005770) factory designated "Luftwaffle-grau" (air force grey) were prepared in 1960 for an agency of the United States government. The M2 with M4 rapid load system was made for the United States military and designated KS15-4. It later became the civilian M2R. Early M2's have rewind buttons (at first hold down then stay down); cameras from 970261 have rewind levers. The fram illumination window on early cameras has a flat outward facing surface; later cameras have a stepped surface.

- In order to be able to offer a less expensive camera, Leitz brought out the M2 which costs 20% less than an M3. Although at first it did not have a self-timer or the automatic resetting of the frame counter, the M2 was a huge success even amoung professionals not only because of its price but also for the viewfinder which was set for 35, 50, and 90mm lenses, the most frequently used reportage.

- In 1966, 276 Leica M2 were produced which were predisposed for an eletric motor drive made by Leitz of New York.  These cameras, with serial numbers from 1,163,771 to 1,164,047 had the engraving M2-M on the cover. Upone request, some cameras of this series were modified but without any indication.
