Leica R3 1976-1979

SNR range 1,446,001 - 1,525,350

Units: 35,600 black, only 4250 chrome, 25,000 Mot

Finish: Black, chrome and safari

Shutter: electronically controled vertical action focal plane.

Film advance: Single stroke lever, attachbale winder takes up to two frames per second.

Viewfinder: built in pentaprism,ground glass screen with central split-image rangefinder and microprism ring, aperture and shutter speed exposure mode.

Shutter speeds: 4 sec- 1/1000 + B

Synchronization: 1/90 di sec.

Light meter: selective or average metering TTL.

Exposure modes: manual and automatic.

Film speed range: 12-3200 asa.

Self timer: 12 second delay.

The electronic Leica R3 with an Electronic Leitz Copal CLS shutter was based on the Minolta XE-1. Three CdS cells allowed for spot metering.

The new name without the "flex" suffix, indicated that the new series of reflex cameras did not represent an evolution of the previous model.

All of the Leica R3s were produced in Portugal except 500 in a chrome finish from 1,446,001 to 1,446,100 and 1,450,000 which were made in Wetzlar.

Between  1977 and 1978 5,000 R3 Safari models were made with an olive green finish and beside the regular serial number, each had a special number engraved on the pen-taprism
